Practice at using our grammatical knowledge can help us gradually build a knowledge system which can allow us to speak our second language the way we speak our first language: fluently, spontaneously, and largely effortlessly. Practice can include a range of activities, from the more traditional exercises typical of a grammar book through more communicative classroom activities to conversations outside the classroom. All these kinds of practice can be beneficial in different ways.

The aim of this handbook is to familiarise teachers of a second language with the way that different kinds of practice activities can help learners develop grammatical knowledge for spontaneous communication.
